Oyster Point Academy’s Extended School Year Program offers continuous instruction Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., for up to eight weeks during the summer. Qualifying students attend weekly field trips and participate in groups to enhance social skills and reinforce concepts learned during the school year.
Our students receive academic instruction in the areas of English, Math and Social Skills in the morning, and then participate in structured social learning activities in the afternoon. Field trips are typically offered twice a week and include visits to museums and colleges, the food bank and Goodwill, ice skating and roller skating, bowling, golfing, and a visit to the Redskins Training Camp in Richmond, Virginia.
The Newport News Police Department has partnered with us in recent years to provide a Youth Leadership Camp week within our Extended School Year Program. Both officers and students work together to overcome physical challenges, such as a three-mile run. The student’s leadership and teamwork skills are put to the test as they complete each activity as a team! The end of the week is celebrated with each team completing the U.S. Army’s Obstacle Training course on Ft. Eustis in Newport News, followed by a graduation ceremony.
