What’s Happening at Oyster Point Academy

Youth Leadership Camp

NNPD man hugging a boyWe’ve partnered with The Newport News Police Department to provide a Youth Leadership Camp week within our Extended School Year Program. Officers and students complete challenges side-by-side, including a three-mile run, a scavenger hunt, and the U.S. Army’s Obstacle Training Course on Ft. Eustis. Participants also take field trips to locations such as the Transportation Museum and the Yorktown Battlefield.

Officers in plainclothes work closely with students under the supervision of Oyster Point Academy Staff. At the end of the week, students participate in a graduation and awards ceremony led by officers in uniform. This is particularly meaningful for youth, as they see that the adults who worked with them throughout the week are also helpers within their community.

The Youth Leadership Camp week is tailored to meet the individual needs of Oyster Point Academy students. Self-esteem, empathy, compassion and leadership are just a few of the positive qualities that students gain from this experience.
